The students have been in contact with the school via Skype, created galimotos in Stem Lab, created African inspired art pieces in Art Class, learned Swahili phrases in Spanish Class, African dances and games in gym class and a song in Swahili in Music Class. The students presented their work and their talents at the Global Expressions Talent Show to benefit the Cheery Education Center of Kibera, Kenya. Polar Palooza polar palooza

Goodridge Elementary hosted its third annual Polar Palooza Art Exhibit Tuesday night. The second grade students presented non-fiction works of writing through digital presentations via a QR code that was accompanied by art representing a polar animal. The students were accepting donations to go to the Cincinnati Zoo's Adopt-an-Animal program to help support the health and care of a polar animal at the zoo. Last year, the students raised enough money to adopt a polar bear and a King Penguin!

Additional School Resource Officers logo

In light of the Florida and Marshall County, Kentucky school tragedies, Superintendent Dr. Randy Poe working in collaboration with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department is adding additional School Resource Officers (SRO’s) to the district’s elementary schools.

Boone County Schools Statement on Copy-Cat Threats logo

Boone County Schools is one of many school districts across the country that is being subjected to copy- cat threats of the school tragedy in Florida.  We are working with local authorities as they investigate a recent rash of rumors and threats on our campuses.  Student suspects in each of the cases were immediately identified and apprehended.  They were charged by local authorities and disciplined by their schools.   In each case a thorough investigation was conducted by the school district and authorities.  No student or staff member was ever in danger. Confidentiality laws prevent Boone County Schools from talking about the persons involved or the specifics of the incidents. Boone County Schools will continue to remain on alert, following our safety protocols and working with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and Florence Police as future issues arise.

Solar Eclipse

eclipse

Important Information about the Solar Eclipse

On Monday August 21st, 2017 we will experience a total solar eclipse, an event that hasn’t occurred over the U.S. mainland since 1979.  A total solar eclipse, which is when the moon completely covers the sun, will occur across 14 states in the continental U.S. along a 70-mile-wide swath of the country.  While Boone County is not located in this area, we will still be able to view the partial solar eclipse.

This event will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students.  Many of our schools will have special activities or lessons planned for this day to accompany the event.  While this event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety.  While it should be common sense not to stare directly at the sun with your naked eyes, this advice will be even more important during this event.  The eclipse must be viewed only through proper eclipse glasses.  Schools with planned viewing activities will require students to wear proper solar eclipse glasses.

In order to protect our students’ eyes during this event:

  • Students will not participate in any unstructured outdoor activities, including recess
  • Students will be advised to not look directly at the sun without wearing solar eclipse glasses
  • We will provide additional personnel until 4pm for parents who do not want their children riding the bus during the eclipse.Children who do not ride the bus for that reason will have to be picked up by parents at 4pm.
Transportation Department "Mock Run" on Monday, August 14th

Bus

On Monday, August 14th, the Transportation Department will conduct a community wide rehearsal of all bus routes.  The buses will be running all routes at the regularly scheduled times.  This will include mid-day Kindergarten runs as well as our normal morning and afternoon routes.

·         We hope students and parents will take this opportunity to meet and greet their drivers and become familiar with the stops in their neighborhood.

·         We ask that members of the community take some extra precautions on Monday morning as the buses and some students will be on the streets.

·         Please remember students will be allowed to come on board the bus.  However, we request parents abide by the District Policy of not boarding the bus.”
