I hope your children came home from school on Friday more excited than normal. It was our first official Club Day. I can tell you that excitement and energy was running high ALL day on Friday!!
This is something I have been trying to figure out for our students for a couple of years. We do have several extracurricular activities at the school, but it is mostly for the older students. Trying to figure out a club program that would be after school for all grade levels was just not possible. So we have incorporated it into our school day. It really turned out better than I could imagine. I cannot thank the staff and volunteers enough for their planning and effort.
Once a month on a Friday, each grade level will have a club day. The club time lasts anywhere from 60-90 minutes. There were some pretty cool activities going on. We had clubs for: art, science, reader's theater, crafts, exercise, games, math, STEAM, coding, frisbee golf, etc. That is just a short list of the clubs. All of the clubs were determined by student interest. The students will have the opportunity to experience other clubs depending on how the grade level has it scheduled.
We know that the key to student success, outside of their level of happiness, is student voice, choice, and engagement. It all goes hand-in-hand. Well Friday was a perfect example of all of that in action. Actually, I think the adults were as excited about the day as the students.
I look forward to being able to share some pictures in the next TWAM as soon as I have photo releases confirmed. This day really would not have been possible without the willingness of the staff to take a risk. I am so glad we did. I LOVED visiting the clubs and talking to the students. It was definitely a great day! I am very much looking forward to club day in October!!
