Congratulations to the YMCA

We are so excited to share that the YMCA programs here at Thornwilde—including Extended Kindergarten, Before School, and Afterschool programming—received a 5 Star rating in the new Kentucky All STARS system. This is the highest rating a program can obtain!

This is a huge accomplishment and we are very proud of this amazing recognition for Ms. Mary, Mr. Logan, and the entire Y team. Less than 40 programs in Kentucky have obtained this rating! Kentucky All Stars is a new expanded five-star quality rating and improvement system serving all early-care and education programs.  It recognizes programs that have made a commitment to continuous quality improvement. It focuses on family and community engagement, staff qualifications, classroom and instructional quality and administrative and leadership practices.

Solar Eclipse

Important Information about the Solar Eclipse

On Monday August 21st, 2017 we will experience a total solar eclipse, an event that hasn’t occurred over the U.S. mainland since 1979.  A total solar eclipse, which is when the moon completely covers the sun, will occur across 14 states in the continental U.S. along a 70-mile-wide swath of the country.  While Boone County is not located in this area, we will still be able to view the partial solar eclipse.

This event will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students.  Many of our schools will have special activities or lessons planned for this day to accompany the event.  While this event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety.  While it should be common sense not to stare directly at the sun with your naked eyes, this advice will be even more important during this event.  The eclipse must be viewed only through proper eclipse glasses.  Schools with planned viewing activities will require students to wear proper solar eclipse glasses.

In order to protect our students’ eyes during this event:

  • Students will not participate in any unstructured outdoor activities, including recess
  • Students will be advised to not look directly at the sun without wearing solar eclipse glasses
  • We will provide additional personnel until 4pm for parents who do not want their children riding the bus during the eclipse.Children who do not ride the bus for that reason will have to be picked up by parents at 4pm.

To be eligible for this award, schools are graded on a multi-point inspection, in which they must achieve a minimum score of 75%. True to TES form—we blew it away with a score of 85%!

End of the Year

It’s Official...   end of the year

We are moving into the last part of our school year, and our Wildcats have many exciting things coming up!  Below are some important dates that we know families have been eagerly awaiting:

The LAST DAY for students will be Wednesday, May 24th.  This was just decided by the Board of Education this past week.

STATE TESTING is scheduled to occur May 9-15. It is extremely important that your child be in school each day for testing.  It’s their time to shine!

KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES: Please note that both AM and PM Kindergarten students will attend Field Day and Kindergarten Promotion in the AM.   All PM kindergarten students will attend during the morning session from 8:55am—12:03pm. Parents of afternoon kindergarten students will need to make arrangements for their own transportation to and from school on these two days.  YMCA Extended Kindergarten Families: Be sure to speak with Ms. Mary about your child and the services available on these two days.

Check the April Wildcat for more important dates and events.

Transportation Updates

It’s time to talk TRANSPORTATION for your Wildcat! Ensuring that each and every student gets to the right place, at the right time, is a task that needs carefully managed to help ensure the safety of all involved. The BC Transportation Dept. has reset all transportation information in their system, and your child’s stop/bus number is based only on the student’s home address.

Yearbook Orders

yearbook orders

Yearbook ordering is currently OPEN! We highly recommend ordering your yearbook online! It’s fast, easy and simple --- for all involved! (Paper Order forms will be made available in early May. If choosing this method – all checks/money orders are made payable to Lifetouch).

We cannot stress enough that if you are interested in a Yearbook to go ahead and place your order NOW! We do not order a surplus of yearbooks. YOU MUST ORDER YOUR YEARBOOK IN ADVANCE!  This is a memorable keepsake and a great way to support TES.

Yearbooks can be purchased from the Lifetouch Yearbook link (ybpay.lifetouch.com) found on either the TES or PTA website. Yearbook orders will be accepted until the last day of school.

Our school’s 2016-2017 Yearbook ID code is 11648517.

The basic yearbook is $20, but there are a number of add-on options that are available for purchase.
