The Thoroughbred Family will be using the Buck Institute's Gold Standard for Project Based Learning and Summit's Platform for Mastery Learning to help our students develop the 21st Century Skills needed to succeed in college, careers, and life. We are incredibly excited about being able to combine these 2 approaches to give our students a rich, supportive, individualized, and self-directed learning experience.
The Buck Institute's Gold Standard for Project Based Learning
Project Based Learning using the Buck Institute approach goes beyond the traditional school projects -- that sometimes involved a lot of work done by Mom or Dad, often late at night on Sundays. Students will be working on PBL projects in all 4 Core Curriculum Areas all throughout the year. Projects will primarily be completed during school hours by pairs or small groups of students. The focus of the PBL projects is not only on the outputs, but also on the real-world, process skills students have the opportunity to use and improve as they engage in solving relevant problems and customer-focused deliverables.

The Summit Approach for Personalized, Mastery-based Learning:
The Summit Personalized Learning Program is a research based, personalized learning approach that uses a cutting-edge, web-based IT platform (developed by engineers and developers at Facebook) to ensure all students can master required skills and knowledge at their own pace in a self-directed manner. The Summit Approach includes 4 Key Elements:
Emphasis is placed on the 7 Domains of Cognitive Skills needed to really succeed in not only academics, but also life in general. (See the Summit Page in the Left-side Column for a detailed document describing The Cognitive Skills). Cognitive Skills are primarily developed through completion of Project Based Learning activities matched with the required curriuculum at each grade level. Content Knowledge is mastered during Personal Learning Time (PLT) where students follow their Personalized Learning Plans and get to choose WHEN and HOW they learn best. With the Summit Approach, the Habits of Success aren't just words or phrases on posters. They are key discussion points during the regular, personalized Mentoring Sessions students will have with their dedicated Faculty Mentor through the year. Teacher Biography: Mrs. Beth Kamradt
Mrs. Beth Kamradt earned her first Bachelor's Degree in Math and Science from Penn State in 1981, and began her professional career as a Senior Research Technician at Indiana University School of Medicine doing biochemical assays designed to study the effects of various salts on cardiac membrane functions. While on the IU Campus, Mrs. Kamradt had the opportunity to work with faculty from the School of Education, Instructional Design Department, to develop a number of training programs for Jr. Research Technicians on common biochemical experimental techniques. As a result of this experience, she enrolled in the IU School of Education, and completed a Masters Degree in Education in Instructional Design and Organizational Development in 1987.
Following an Instructional Design Internship at AT&T Bell Labs where Mrs. Kamradt worked with content experts to help develop their first, comprehensive training program in Systems Engineering, she went to work as an Instructional Design Consultant for Newman Howey & Associates and Applied Learning, Inc. Key clients included Shearson Lehman, Apple, Firestone, and Microsoft with projects ranging from functional, procedural ,and organizational change efforts to learner needs assessments, task analyses, courseware development, and training video productions. In a desire to further her project management and Six Sigma Quality skills and knowledge, Mrs. Kamradt accepted an offer from Motorola to become a Training Project Manager within their RTSG Division to design and development engineering and management courseware. After 2 years, Mrs. Kamradt was recruited for a Global Project Management position at Eli Lilly to transform their instructor-led Sales Training Curriculum into a blended self-directed/ classroom based system. Her final project management assignment at Eli Lilly involved the global rollout of Zyprexa. This training project required the simultaneous implementation of a multi media trianing system for sales representatives, health care providers, and patients in 51countries in 28 launguages. Following the the successful rollout, Mrs. Kamradt was asked to join Unisys as a Director of Training, Management Development, and Quality to oversee the rollout of a pan-European digital, cellular phone system. In 1998, she was recruited by GE Capital as a V.P. of Training & Quality within GE C-ITS. With this corporate move, she and her family (Husband, Tom, and son, Matthew) re-located to Hebron, KY. At GE Capital, Mrs. Kamradt was responsible for the creation and management of a global training team serving a computer services company with an employee base of 14,000 located across 18 countries.
Mrs. Kamradt worked for GE until the Fall of 2001, when in response to 9/11, she made a committment to be of more service to her community and country. Following her love of learning and the learning process, Mrs. Kamradt enrolled at NKU and earned a Bachelor's Degree in Middle School Education with Certifications in: Science, Social Studies, and Language Arts in 2003. This is Mrs. Kamradt's 14th year at CMS where she has taught classes in:
- 6th Grade Language Arts and Science
- 7th Grade Social Studies
- 8th Grade Science, Social Studies and Language Arts
- Unified Arts: Government, Physical Science, Economics, and Anthropology
- Project Based Learning
During the 2017-2018 School Year, Mrs. Kamradt will be drawing on her experience as a project manager, training from the Buck Institute for Project Based Learning, and scientific background to lead the Thoroughbred PBL class in project based learning efforts predominantly focused on scientific solutions.
Mrs. Kamradt has been recognized by the NKY Chamber of Commerce as a Golden Apple Award recipent and is BCS Break the Mold Award winner.
