Solar Eclipse

eclipse

Important Information about the Solar Eclipse

On Monday August 21st, 2017 we will experience a total solar eclipse, an event that hasn’t occurred over the U.S. mainland since 1979.  A total solar eclipse, which is when the moon completely covers the sun, will occur across 14 states in the continental U.S. along a 70-mile-wide swath of the country.  While Boone County is not located in this area, we will still be able to view the partial solar eclipse.

This event will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students.  Many of our schools will have special activities or lessons planned for this day to accompany the event.  While this event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety.  While it should be common sense not to stare directly at the sun with your naked eyes, this advice will be even more important during this event.  The eclipse must be viewed only through proper eclipse glasses.  Schools with planned viewing activities will require students to wear proper solar eclipse glasses.

In order to protect our students’ eyes during this event:

  • Students will not participate in any unstructured outdoor activities, including recess
  • Students will be advised to not look directly at the sun without wearing solar eclipse glasses
  • We will provide additional personnel until 4pm for parents who do not want their children riding the bus during the eclipse.Children who do not ride the bus for that reason will have to be picked up by parents at 4pm.

Principal"s Message

I would like to welcome you to Collins Elementary School and another exciting school year. I am excited to begin my fourth year as the Principal at Collins and about the adventure we are about to begin on for the 2017-2018 school year.

Being an educator in the Boone County Schools for the last 22 years, Collins Elementary is rich in tradition, academic focus, and community involvement.  These are just a few reasons I am proud to be a part of this school. As your Principal, I will filter all decisions through one simple question, “Is this what is best for the students at Collins?”  I will work with the faculty and staff to continue to introduce new ideas and programs that are aimed at taking the students at Collins into the 21st Century. Even though the world around us is changing that does not mean we have abandoned old values that have helped create the wonderful environment and rich academics, which are established at Collins.

We will stress the essence of quality within our school and at the same time; reinvigorate the academics, fine arts, and extra-curricular activities. This cannot be done by just one person; it is the culmination of quality work by students, staff, parents, and the community.

Thank you in advance for your partnership for the 2017-2018 school year.  I look forward to meeting you and your child throughout this year.  I know your child’s educational experience is very important to you and the staff at Collins Elementary take that responsibility very seriously. Please do not hesitate to contact me at any time if I may be of assistance.

Sincerely,

Mr. Loring
