Medal of Honor recipient Hershel “Woody” Williams visited Kelly Elementary and Conner High School on Wednesday. Mr. Williams was here to celebrate the Northern Kentucky Gold Star Families memorial to be constructed in honor of the men and women these Gold Star Families have lost. After visiting our schools, Mr. Williams helped break ground for the new memorial at the Kentucky Veterans Cemetery North.
Mr Williams was a Marine Corps flamethrower on Iwo Jima and has been awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor by President Truman. He has since become an ambassador for Gold Star Families and is the central figure of the Hershel Woody Williams Foundation. He is one of four living Medal of Honor recipients from WWII. He is the only one that is able to get around. He travels all over the United States in honor of those with whom he served and those who paid the ultimate price for America’s freedom.
