Winter Weather thermometer

Boone County Schools have a great team working tirelessly to make decisions on closing or delaying school, always keeping the safety of our students as the top priority.  As early as 3:00 a.m., if snow, freezing rain, sleet or other dangerous precipitation presents our Assistant Superintendent for Operations set out to inspect the road conditions. They drive designated routes, checking the roadways that are typically the most dangerous when snow covered.  The team considers safe travel not only on streets but sidewalks, parking lots, and  driveways.  Other conditions to consider include the outside temperature, wind chill factor and the amount of precipitation fallen or falling. The Assistant Superintendent for Operations contacts the county public works department to check on road clearing progress.  Once enough information is gathered and shared with the Superintendent the team focuses on one question:  Would you feel safe transporting students in a school bus in the current or predicted conditions?

Classroom Spelling Bee Spelling Bee 2019

Boone County Schools Statement on Copy-Cat Threats logo

Boone County Schools is one of many school districts across the country that is being subjected to copy- cat threats of the school tragedy in Florida.  We are working with local authorities as they investigate a recent rash of rumors and threats on our campuses.  Student suspects in each of the cases were immediately identified and apprehended.  They were charged by local authorities and disciplined by their schools.   In each case a thorough investigation was conducted by the school district and authorities.  No student or staff member was ever in danger. Confidentiality laws prevent Boone County Schools from talking about the persons involved or the specifics of the incidents. Boone County Schools will continue to remain on alert, following our safety protocols and working with the Boone County Sheriff’s Department and Florence Police as future issues arise.

Solar Eclipse

Important Information about the Solar Eclipse

On Monday August 21st, 2017 we will experience a total solar eclipse, an event that hasn’t occurred over the U.S. mainland since 1979.  A total solar eclipse, which is when the moon completely covers the sun, will occur across 14 states in the continental U.S. along a 70-mile-wide swath of the country.  While Boone County is not located in this area, we will still be able to view the partial solar eclipse.

This event will be an extraordinary educational opportunity for our students.  Many of our schools will have special activities or lessons planned for this day to accompany the event.  While this event is extremely exciting for our students, we must also acknowledge the importance of proper eye safety.  While it should be common sense not to stare directly at the sun with your naked eyes, this advice will be even more important during this event.  The eclipse must be viewed only through proper eclipse glasses.  Schools with planned viewing activities will require students to wear proper solar eclipse glasses.

In order to protect our students’ eyes during this event:

  • Students will not participate in any unstructured outdoor activities, including recess
  • Students will be advised to not look directly at the sun without wearing solar eclipse glasses
  • We will provide additional personnel until 4pm for parents who do not want their children riding the bus during the eclipse.Children who do not ride the bus for that reason will have to be picked up by parents at 4pm.

May's Focus Habit- Habit 7 Sharpen the Saw

May's Focus Habit is Habit 7:  Sharpen the Saw

Habits 1-6 are about working to make yourself more reliable, more accountable, and to increase your own performance in addition to teaching you how to work best with others for stellar results.

Habit 7 is very different.  Habit 7 says, "Step back and take a break
and recharge."  We call this "Sharpening the Saw".

You can Sharpen the Saw in many different ways.  This week,
our kids told us that they sharpen their saws by:

1.  Walking the dog.

2.  Playing a sport.

3.  Dancing.

4.  Reading.

5.  Knitting.

6.  Playing Minecraft.

7.  Playing outside with friends.

8.  Doing their friends' hair.

9.  Going on vacation.

How do YOU sharpen your saw?  Balance is best.

Fever and Illness Guidelines

With the heightened flu season upon us please take time to review the District Fever and Exclusion Guidelines. A fever is a physiological response to inflammation or infection, illness or injury, or the result of heat exposure. While not always cause for alarm, it is sometimes the sign of a serious problem. Left untreated, a fever could be uncomfortable, cause dehydration and stress the cardio-vascular system. An oral temperature* of over 100.4 degrees Fahrenheit is considered a fever.

Minecraft Hangout is ready to roll! For grades K-5!!

For the past several months, our staff has been researching and attempting to piece together a Minecraft Club for our kids. We call in Minecraft Hangout. After many trials we have purchased a server for our building as this is the only way to avoid proxy issues with Minecraft in the school setting.

The good news is that this allows us to set up a safe in-school server of just our Longbranch kids. The only disappointment for kids is they can’t play in the same world they play in at home. This is a new persona and game for them. For more information about this server, visit: http://minecraftedu.com/page/
