From The Superintendent - September 8th

Dear Boone County Families & Employees,

During this past week I visited several of our schools and had a great experience. Seeing our students in the buildings and their classrooms, visiting with their friends, and collaborating on projects and classwork was very exciting for me to observe.  The overall atmosphere in our schools was very positive and respectful.  My sincere thanks go out to all of our employees for ensuring a great start to our school year.

I know that we are all thankful that our schools remain open for our students’ benefit.  To keep our students and staff safe, we will continue to implement all of our COVID-19 layered prevention strategies.  Doing so will assist our school district in providing daily, in-person instruction.

Over the past week, the number of COVID-19 cases and quarantines for students were 163 positive cases and 687 quarantines for our student population of over 20,000.  We also had 24 positive cases and 23 quarantines for staff across our nearly 4,000 employees.  Remember that this data takes a day or two to be processed and posted so there may be some lag time in all data posted on our district website.

The COVID-19 incidence rate in Boone County has increased over the last week (M-F) per the KY Department of Public Health (KDPH): 41.1, 43.8, 45.9, 44.5, 49.9 cases per 100,000 population.  A county incidence rate above 25.0 is in the HIGH or red category.  The latest average for county incidence rate in KY is 89.89 cases per 100,000 population.  Also according to KDPH, Boone County is 82% fully vaccinated of population 18 yrs. old or above and 66% fully vaccinated of entire population.  Boone County currently has one of the highest rates of COVID-19 vaccinations in KY and even while the COVID-19 incidence rate for Boone County is at the HIGH level, it is one of the lowest incidence rates in the state.  We strongly encourage all families and employees to take the vaccine or consult their family physician regarding the COVID-19 vaccine.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we provide bus transportation to our students.  We are in need of additional bus drivers and at times may have to implement double-runs, where a bus will return to school after its normal route and take a second bus of students home, when we have driver absences.  We may also have some short delays as we practice our bus safety procedures this month.

Our bus drivers are amazing people and they perform a great service to our students and our schools.  Here is a very informative and insightful article by a bus driver in KY.  We have a great need for bus drivers, custodians, and paraeducators, please visit our Employment Opportunities page to view open positions in the Boone County Schools.

The Kentucky State Legislature is now in session and we are currently monitoring their activities and potential impact on our school district.  We will communicate any changes, as necessary, directly to our families and employees.
