Dear Parents,

Welcome to sixth grade English Language Arts class.  This year promises to be fast paced, challenging, and engaging.  The students will use the Springboard framework which is a Pre-Advanced Placement program.  This program is designed around 21st century skills including the 4-C’s: Creativity, Collaboration, Communication, and Critical Thinking in preparation for increasingly complex courses in high school.

For class, your child will need a 1-inch binder, filler paper, pencils, highlighter, and an Expo marker.  Personal electronic devices such as a smart phone, tablet, Ipod, or laptop are always welcome in ELA just as long they are used for lesson-related research or as a class resource.

Monday through Thursday, your child will begin class with an Entrance Ticket and Warm Up activity.  The focus of the Entrance Ticket is primarily grammar, and Warm Ups have a multi focus of word skills, spelling and mechanics, reading, literature, research and information skills.  Correct answers will be reviewed each day in class, and your child will be expected to review answers at home before Friday’s quizzes over the content.

Throughout the school year, the students will access a number of websites at school and at home.  Collaborize Classroom is a class blogging site the students will utilize.  SATVocabtest is an online, independent vocabulary study.  The words are challenging, and require practice.  Multiple choice tests will be given on the SAT words, and bonus points will be awarded to students submitting 90% or higher practice tests via email.   Edmodo will be available for both students and parents for class updates and assignments.  Remind 101 is a handy way for me to text message class-related information to students and stay in touch with you, the parents.

Grades are posted frequently on Infinite Campus; they can be accessed on the Parent Portal.  If you didn’t receive log-in instructions at schedule pick-up, these are available in the main office.  I send home nightly, via email, due assignment reminders as well as any other bits of information.  Please take the time to check these with your child.  If you have any comments, questions, or concerns, email me, and I promise to respond promptly.

                                                                                                                                    Thank you,

Mrs. Julie Ashley
