From The Desk Of The Superintendent
December 8, 2023
Achieving Excellence Together is not just our district slogan it’s a Boone County Schools tradition. We are known as a distinguished district of innovation in Northern Kentucky and throughout the Commonwealth. And while the pandemic did challenge every norm, we have bounced back. Since 2020 we have embarked on a journey of innovation, collaboration, and progress, embracing innovative education concepts and practices to ensure that our students are prepared for the world of tomorrow. That journey is part of our district’s Theory of Action which I helped develop—the concept that a highly collaborative professional learning community leads to students performing at high levels.
Under my leadership that is exactly where we are; and I attribute and celebrate that success to a new strategic plan that led to the creation and implementation of many successful programs and processes and also providing a robust set of durable student skills ensuring a World Class Education is obtainable for each and every student in the Boone County Schools.
My visions for this work included, among many things, the implementation of a Multi-tiered System of Support, Common Interim Assessments in Math and Reading, partnering with the NKY Workforce Investment Board to improve and align our students’ Career Pathway Opportunities, the creation of the ACCEL Academy for virtual instruction, the Superintendent’s Ambassador Program for community members to learn about our district and train to become liaisons in the community. The creation of our highly successful Business Leader RoundTable and Legislative RoundTable to connect the business community and state representatives with the innovative and award-winning work of the students in our public school district.
During my tenure, I have overseen the opening of a brand-new elementary school, renovated the RISE Academy, while twelve of our schools have earned national Energy Star efficiency Awards. We value the relationships within and across our district, schools, and community and we emphasize a healthy work-life balance for our colleagues, family, and friends. These collaborative values led to the creation of a District Liaison program directly linking our schools to the District and Board of Education. Each of our schools now have a district leader assigned to them to listen, share, provide support, and collaborate.
We’ve accomplished the near impossible since I became Superintendent four years ago. Our district has transformed itself and I am proud of the unprecedented accomplishments under my leadership over the last four academic years. While my work is certainly not done, I am ambitious, I have a few more projects I am excited to complete before the end of the school year. I am very confident I have laid a solid foundation for academic growth, building upon the Boone County School district tradition, Achieving Excellence Together.
All this to say, after 33 fulfilling years in education as a Superintendent, High School Principal, Assistant Principal, Teacher, and Coach the time has come for me to bid farewell and embrace the joys of retirement at the end of the 2023-24 school year. I look forward to spending more time with my family and friends, serving the members of my church, and continuing to serve the Boone County community.
To everyone, I express my deepest gratitude and will always cherish the personal and professional relationships that I developed over the last three decades of my career. It has been an honor and privilege to serve as your superintendent. I look forward to witnessing the continued growth and success of this remarkable educational community. Here’s to the next chapter for each of us and to the bright future of this extraordinary school district.
With my heartfelt gratitude,
Matthew L. Turner
